In 1972, what would become one of the longest-running commercial campaigns aired for the very first time. The commercial focuses on three young brothers eating breakfast together. In front of them is a bowl of LIFE cereal. As the two older brothers try getting the other one to try it, one sarcastically comments, “It’s supposed to be good for you.” Pushing the bowl back and forth between each other, the conversation turns into: “Did you try it?” “I’m not gonna try it. You try it.” “I’m not gonna try it.”

And then one of the brothers has the lightbulb moment: Let’s get Mikey. Yeah. He won’t eat it. He hates everything.

With the bowl in front of him, Mikey takes the first bite and never looks back, to which the brothers exclaim, “He likes it! Hey, Mikey!”

Scripture does not promise that life will always be easy or that we’ll always like what we see coming. The Bible does not say that following Christ will be comfortable or stress-free. As a matter of fact, Jesus said several times that it would be challenging, difficult, at times even painful.

But He also promised it would be worth it. He promised joy (which isn’t limited by our circumstances). He promised peace (which transcends our situations). He promised abundance (which the enemy can’t steal, kill, or destroy). He also promised we wouldn’t have to do life alone.

On the one hand, He said, “I will never leave you or abandon you.” And on the other hand, He gave us each other:

Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without
wavering, since He who promised is faithful.
And let us watch out for one another to provoke love and
good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some
are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and
all the more as you see the day approaching
